Columbia MO Electrical

Customer and employee relationships key to Midway Electric, Inc.’s growth.

Midway Electric, Inc.’s motto, “Powered by People with Pride”, centers on the business aspect that has grown this 8 year old company – people. Owners, Brandon and Michele Spry, concentrate on consumers by providing quality, timely service as well as treating their employees like family.

Hickman High School sweethearts, the Spry’s married in 1997.  In 2001 the couple reached a crossroad when the electrical contractor Brandon was working for closed its Columbia branch. Brandon was faced with finding a new job or starting his own electrical contracting company. The couple chose an independent venture, and the Spry’s opened Midway Electric, Inc. with 2 employees and one van.

The business has added a few more employees and service vehicles since their start in 2001.  In 2006 they added a new 11, 700 square foot building that the Spry’s own. About the same time Michele Spry joined the business full time to help oversee day to day operations.

The husband and wife partnership has worked well for the Spry’s. “Not many couples can work together, let alone share an office together”, Michele Spry said. “It actually works out pretty good between us since I am stubborn and he is laid back”.

A 1994 Hickman graduate, Brandon Spry is a block licensed master electrician. For building contractors and developers, their firm offers electrical services for new construction and commercial remodeling; project management; service contracts; voice, data, and video installation.

Midway Electric, Inc. provides residential services as well, including new construction; re-wiring older homes; service upgrades; voice, data, audio, video and home security installation.

The company also offers system troubleshooting, Standby Home Generators, parking lot and aerial lighting installation and repair, trenching, underground electrical installation, and worry-free contracts. They have staff that is available 24/7 for emergency electrical needs.

The Spry’s and their staff concentrate on customer service and consistently work to fulfill the company’s motto. They offer free estimates and try to provide customers options that will meet their project goals and fit their budgets.

As business owners and employers, the Spry’s themselves strive to fulfill the motto toward their staff. “I can honestly say without our employees, we wouldn’t be here”, she added.

Midway Electric, Inc. tries to run as eco-friendly as possible. They try to recycle old ballast, scrap wire and metals that are cleaned up from their completed projects.

In addition to a strong work ethic, the pair contributes to the community through the Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Women’s Network, and a few additional activities. Michele Spry is a Chamber of Commerce Ambassador and is a co-chair for the Women’s Network committee called Changing the Odds.

“I have had a blast with these wonderful people that I have met and became friends with and hope to gain much more knowledge and friendship in the future” Michele said.

Because their business is still relatively young, the couple has limited time to spend in community activities. “Brandon and I are very involved in our business, and my hope is in the near future to allow more time to be able to involve myself more in the community” she said.

For now, they plan to concentrate on moving the company forward. “We have a great time, and honestly, we try to see the good in every situation. Owning our business has been tough but very rewarding” Michele said. “We have a strong will and lots of determination and support from employees, family and friends”.
